Acer saccharinum

Deciduous tree. Fast growth. Native to eastern and central North America growing in moist, poorly drained soils on floodplains, and along the edges of streams and rivers. Somewhat graceful habit. Greenish yellow flowers bloom in clusters in early spring before the foliage. Flowers give way to paired samaras. Bark is gray to brownish gray. Mature tree trunks and limbs develop a shaggy appearance as the bark develops long thin flaky scales that exfoliate at the ends. Deeply five-lobed light green leaves (to 6 inches across) have silvery undersides. Fall color is usually unremarkable. Moderate to regular water needs once established.
